Blogging: Modern Journalism

Why I Blog by Andrew Sullivan

Is blogging journalism? Blogging is the modern form of posting information and opinions about news. Now news is instant, able to be constantly updated and changed, and it is more emotional and spur of the moment as Andrew Sullivan described in his article about why he blogs. Whether it is news about national security or news about whether or not Little Jimmy from the middle of nowhere enjoyed his bologna sandwich at lunch today it is still news…to someone. But, with that said, just because everyone basically has a license to blog or tell of news doesn’t necessarily mean they should.

In response to the question does it even matter if blogging is journalism, yes it does matter. How we are getting news is evolving. Everyone can now be a writer and get their word out. But as Andrew Sullivan said, there is the news on the blogs, but there will still be news in print. Just like jazz music didn’t overtake the music world, blogging will not overtake the writing world.

There really is nothing like reading the newspaper while eating your breakfast, or laying on your couch. There is something about physically holding the words in your hands that cannot be replaced. I don’t think the Sunday newspaper will go anywhere for a while.

Blogging might even be helping the writing world. As Sullivan said, his articles are more fair and he feels they are written better because he sees both sides of the topic after people commenting on his blogs.

Hey Matt. I think he also did a good job addressing the idea of blogging as “writing out loud.” Some posts will be good, some will be great and some terrible. That’s the nature of the game.
